MeetingThe workplace is a natural and essential venue to offer opportunities for improving workplace basic skills.  

Increasing global competition is driving demand for upskilling in all jobs.  Critically, those in the workforce need to continually update and enhance their basic skills which provide the foundation for learning all other skills.

Workplace basic skills refer to the skills and competences needed to function effectively, efficiently and safely in the workplace.  The ability to read, understand, write, calculate, communicate effectively, critically think in particular problem solve, adapt to change and work as part of an effective team are essential basic skills.  The introduction of new and advanced technologies in the workplace directly affects the skills required and increases the skill sets needed to use and operate within this new technological workplace.

Did you know?

In Ireland nearly 30% of the workforce has Junior Cert or less, while 10% has primary or no formal qualifications at all.  Significantly, 25% of adults lack very basic skills and one in five of the workforce have literacy skills below the level needed in today’s workplace.  The National Skills Strategy has highlighted that these statistics could have a detrimental effect on Irelands plans to remain economically competitive.  (IALS)
